Memo to the Prime Minister of Egypt from the Forum of Independent Human Rights NGOs on Practical Steps to Ensure Full Citizenship

Jan. 19, 2011The reactions to the illegal bombing of the Two Saints Church in Alexandria demonstrate that religious and sectarian tensions have reached dangerous levels that threaten to shatter what remains of the foundation for a peaceful existence between Muslims and Copts. This incident comes after the security establishment has been given monopoly over all incidents involving religious tensions, and state institutions have ignored the issue by not acting on the principles of citizenship, equality, and equal opportunity for all citizens, regardless of their religion. For many long years, the state has chosen political expediency over using the rule of law and the demands of justice to address crimes of sectarian violence. In practice, this has established a norm of

A New-Year Gift for the Copts : Yet Another Massacre

Coptic Solidarity vehemently condemns the odious deadly attack waged againstthe Copts (native Christians of Egypt) by beastly-minded Islamists. A powerful explosion took place outside a church in Alexandria during a NewYear’s Eve mass, killing at least 23 people and wounding more than 90. It camejust as some of the worshipers, which numbered about 1,000, had begun toleave. Wrecked cars and debris were left scattered in the street. President Hosni Mubarak and his government officials were quick to blamethe attack on “foreign hands.” Trying to evade all responsibility, the state-ownedmedia ventured to point at Al-Qaeda or… the Israeli Mossad.   In recent months, groups of Islamic ‘Salafists’ held weekly rampantdemonstrations after the Friday Prayers, under the watchful eyes of the police.Virulent

A barbaric attack by egypt’s security forces against the copts

Coptic Solidarity condemns the brutal attack by the State Security forces on November 24 against the Coptic community in the district of Omrania, Guiza Governorate. This unjustified aggression left at least three dead and dozens wounded, including over 20 who were blinded, either partially or totally. Several persons still remain missing. It is compulsory in Egypt to obtain a presidential decree in order to construct any new church. A draconian procedure that lasts for years, if not decades, and is controlled by the infamous State Security apparatus. Even minor repair and renovation work require a permit from the local governor. Such procedures naturally do not apply to mosques. In Omrania, Coptic inhabitants, who number over ten thousand, have made several

Alarming campaign of incitement against the copts in egypt

Coptic Solidarity warned today that the recent campaign of intimidation and incitements targeting the Copts in Egypt is on the rise. The Copts are the indigenous Christian Egyptians. They amount to 12-15% of Egypt’s population, or about ten million. Above and beyond the never-ending and routine scenario of violence, discrimination, alienation, and persecution the Copts have endured, there has been an alarming upsurge of significant anti-Coptic activities over the recent weeks: – Leading Islamic figures unleashed (Sept. 15, and later) virulent televised attacks on the Copts, accusing them of “stocking arms and ammunitions [imported from Israel] in their churches and monasteries” and of “preparing to wage war against Muslims.” Copts were further accused of “inciting sectarian strife and seeking to
